Insulation and window quality have a huge impact on properly sizing your air conditioning and heating system.Īn upstairs space requires considerably more cooling than a downstairs space with the exact same square footage. An older, poorly insulated home may need 1 ton for each 400 square feet of living space. Some newer, very well insulated homes may only need 1 ton of cooling for 800 to 1000 square feet. However, 500-600 square feet per ton of cooling is just a general assumption and should not be your only source of sizing information.
